Tuesday 25 April 2017 John Haycraft strongly believes in planning a painting before starting. He may do one or more thumbnail sketches to sort out composition, tonal values and how to achieve a desired effect. This then gives him the freedom to paint interpretively and to set the scene for a painting success.

Tuesday 28 November 2017 Carla, a representative from Winsor and Newton gave a valuable insight into the range of products available that are capable of producing a vast array of painterly effects. We tested the same colours on Arches 300gsm hot pressed, cold pressed and rough paper to see the effect of the different surfaces. Next all the different gels available in the Liquitex range were used with acrylic paint. Such experimentation is great for the creative process.

Tuesday 26 September 2017 Kevin McKay used his urban landscapes to illustrate how different colours interact within the artwork, The setting can change how we perceive colour. Change the context and the colour is read differently. By using the colour green over areas painted red he was able to change the tone. If the tone was too dark, it could be lightened by wiping off some of the green.

Tuesday 25 july 2017 Guy Warren’s talk centred around a video produced by his son, Paul Warren for a recent exhibition at the S.H. Ervin gallery titled “ Genesis of a Painter.” It focused on works from Guy’s earlier years and those from the last decades. Ann Cape, well known portrait artist, acted as a facilitator by interviewing Guy. Sharing entertaining stories from his life uncovered fascinating insights into this artist’s overwhelming passion for mark making.

You have three tones – dark, medium and light – and the proportion of the whole surface allotted to each must be different. One must be smaller than the others.
